Welcome to Reception Class

The class teacher is Mrs Folkard.

Dear Parents,

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in terms 1 and 2.  It has been a pleasure getting to know you all and my door is always open, so feel free to come and speak to me anytime about anything.  Joining me this year as my teaching assistant will be Mrs Annie Forsdike and covering my admin time will be Mrs Starmer-Smith.

In terms 3 and 4 we will be supporting children to develop their interests and talents.  We will be beginning to lay the foundations for some more formal learning and will be encouraging children’s independent learning skills.  In the foundation stage we rarely work to set topics and will use the children’s interests and fascinations to produce varied and engaging learning experiences.  These experiences will take place in a range of settings including in the school grounds and offsite.  Having spent every Wednesday afternoon involved in forest school activities within our own school grounds, we are now hoping to branch out and begin visiting Brockhill Country Park during these times.  If you are able to offer your time to support these trips, please let us know.

There is, of course, a range of more traditional learning activities that your child will be engaged in.  For example;

Daily phonics sessions.
Daily maths sessions.
Daily reading sessions.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum is play based and your children will experience many different learning opportunities (although they may not realise it!).  It is our job to encourage and extend their play and thinking in order for them to learn effectively.

All of your child’s learning will be documented using ipads.  I now have everyone’s email addresses and once a term an email will be sent giving you an update as to what your child has been doing.  This email can be replied to, giving you more of a voice.

The classroom also has a parents board.  It has a number of sections aimed at keeping you informed.  There is a:

WOW moments section for you to tell us about your child’s WOW moments at home.  This could be anything from riding a two wheeler bike for the first time to counting to 20.
Notices section for pertinent dates, up and coming events and requests.
Star of the day section.
Who’s reached platinum section.
Elmer’s phonics section where the weeks phonics will be displayed.

Lastly, please continue to read with your child 5 times a week (it is imperative that you sign their contact book).  The reading books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, if they have been completed (please keep in mind that if you forget to sign the book we do not know if it has been completed and it will therefore not be changed).  Don’t forget to learn your Elmer phonics and words and to complete the activities sent home in the home learning journal.  The home learning journal will be given out on Fridays and needs to be returned by the following Thursday to be marked and updated.

So far, teaching your children has been a lovely experience and I am very much looking forward to the rest of the school year.

Emma Folkard.
